Helmshore Mills Textile Museum

Nestling side by side in the quiet village of Helmshore in the stunning Rossendale Valley are two original Lancashire textile mills, Higher Mill and Whitaker’s Mill, together known as Helmshore Mills Textile Museum.

You can:

  • Soak up the atmosphere of the historic mills and witness original machinery at work.
  • Follow a journey to discover how raw wool and cotton were transformed into yarn, ready to be woven into cloth
  • Experience the Revolution gallery, where you can follow the story of Lancashire's unique role in the industrial revolution
  • Imagine how the grand and mighty waterwheel powered the stocks as they thumped the wet woollen cloth
  • Have fun and learn in an exceptional environment, at our many activities, events and special exhibitions

Outside of these public opening hours, schools are still welcome to book all learning sessions and pre-booked groups can be arranged for guided tours.

Events

Saturday 20th October 1pm-3pm Shade and Shadows workshop. Learn how to make the illusion of solid objects. Suitable for beginners aged from 16 and all materials will be provided. Booking is essential - ring 01706 226459 or email helmshoremuseum@lancashire.gov.uk

Friday 26th October 10am-12noon Felting workshop. Learn the basic techniques of wet felting. Suitable for beginners aged from 16 and all materials will be provided.  Booking is essential - ring 01706 226459 or email helmshoremuseum@lancashire.gov.uk

Friday 26th October to Sunday 28th October 12noon-4pm Special tours showing how dangerous working life in a mill could be. Children's craft and face painting and Halloween stories. Children taking part must be accompanied by an adult. The activity is suitable for children aged four to 11. Costs apply for the activities, excluding the Halloween activities for children.
